Neighbourhoods
Malasaña or Chamberí: two Madrid neighbourhoods for renters
Two central Madrid neighbourhoods a short walk apart, with a very different feel. We compare Malasaña and Chamberí on noise, space, transport and everyday life.

Many Madrid renters narrow their search to two central neighbourhoods that sit only a short walk apart yet feel quite different: Malasaña and Chamberí. Here is how they compare.
Malasaña: lively and creative
Centred on the Plaza del Dos de Mayo, Malasaña is known for independent shops, vintage stores, cafés and bars. Streets such as Calle del Espíritu Santo and Calle de San Vicente Ferrer are full of small businesses, and Calle de Fuencarral runs along its eastern edge. Buildings are mostly older, and flats tend to be smaller, sometimes interior-facing or without a lift.
Chamberí: residential and calm
To the north, Chamberí has a more settled, residential feel. Life revolves around squares such as Plaza de Olavide, where neighbours meet on the terraces and children play. Calle de Ponzano is popular for tapas, and local markets such as Vallehermoso cover everyday shopping. Many buildings date from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with wide staircases, balconies and larger layouts.
Comparing the two
- Noise: Malasaña can be loud at night, especially at weekends; Chamberí is generally quieter.
- Space: Chamberí more often has larger flats suited to families or sharers; Malasaña suits people who want a compact place in the middle of things.
- Transport: both are well connected, with metro stations such as Tribunal and Noviciado in Malasaña, and Iglesia, Quevedo and Ríos Rosas in Chamberí.
- Everyday life: Malasaña is about going out; Chamberí is about staying local.
Which one suits you
If you work late, enjoy evenings out and do not mind some street noise, Malasaña may suit you well. If you want a quieter base with squares, markets and a neighbourly rhythm, Chamberí is often the better fit. Rents in both are on the higher side for Madrid, so it helps to decide early which compromises you are happy to make.
